Plumes of black smoke rose from a Umbilo, Durban, scrap yard this afternoon, as a fire tore through stacks of tyres and other materials. The blaze is believed to have been started by cable thieves, routinely burning their contraband.
Netcare911 Paramedics and members of Netcare911’s Specialised Rescue Unit responded to the scene and assisted eThekwini Metro firefighters douse the flames.
The yard was evacuated and no one was injured in the incident. The eThekwini Metro firefighters who battled the fire must be commended on brilliant work and steadfast resolve.
