Three gunmen, believed to be linked the Christmas Day killing of six people in KwaMashu last year have been shot and killed by police on the R102, eleven kilometres from Mandini this morning. One man fled the scene on foot and is being sought by police.
It is thought that the men were bound for Stanger on the R102 with the intention of committing a house robbery. Acting on this information, officers of the Organised Crime Unit intercepted the men in-transit.
When confronted by police gunmen opened fire, with the officers taking cover and returning fire in the exchange.
The men sustained multiple gunshot wounds of varying calibre. They were found bloodied at the roadside with spent bullet casings littering the scene. The men were declared dead by Netcare911 Paramedics.
No police officers were injured in the fracas.
