A worker was critically injured at an industrial site in the Wadeville area this afternoon at around 14:25. It is believed that the man was working with a paper compacter when his arm was crushed in the machine.
While fireman and Netcare paramedics tirelessly worked to free the man from the machine, the Netcare medical helicopter with a trauma team was dispatched to assist ground crews to stabilise the critically wounded patient.
Doctors had to sedate the patient and place him on a manual ventilator before emergency workers could free his arm from the machinery. He was dexterously immobilised and then airlifted to the Netcare Union hospital for emergency surgery.
