A man was killed when his vehicle left the N2 Durban bound carriageway near Umkomaas last night.
It is thought that the driver of a VW Citi Golf had been travelling towards Durban when swerved to avoid a slow moving vehicle while negotiating a bend. The VW struck the barrier and rolled repeatedly down a 40m embankment, coming to rest on its roof in a stream.
Tow truck drivers and civilians stopped at the scene and rushed to the man’s aid, trying desperately to lift the vehicle out of the water and pull the driver to safety. Their efforts were in vain.
Paramedics and eThekwini Metro firefighters arrived at the scene to find that the man had died as a result of significant head trauma. He had to be cut free from the mangled wreckage of his car by firefighters using the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic rescue equipment.
