An 80-wagon freight train carrying rock phosphate from Phalaborwa in Limpopo partially derailed, leaving the track damaged, Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) says.

The accident happened on Sunday when 15 wagons of the train left the tracks on a bridge while en route to Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, TFR spokesman Sandile Simelane said in a statement.

It happened at Brakspruitbrug between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa.

Nobody was hurt.

“The line will be closed until all repairs have been completed and early indications are that the repair work may take up to eight weeks.”

Transnet is working with the affected companies, Phalaborwa Mining Company and Foskor, to find solutions while the repairs are carried out.

The cause of the accident was not yet known.
