Relief is pouring in for 513 people displaced when a fire ripped through the Mangologolo informal settlement near Denver, Johannesburg emergency services said on Sunday.
Three major retail stores were offering food and had promised to provide building material, spokesperson Percy Morokane said.
The city’s disaster management and non-governmental organisations had offered blankets.
“The response is positive… We still need school uniforms and books for children,” he said.
Four people were killed in Saturday’s fire. More than 230 shacks were burnt to the ground and 513 people were left homeless.
Disaster management had offered the displaced a shelter, but they declined it, opting to stay with friends and relatives while rebuilding their dwellings.
Morokane appealed to people who wanted to help to call the 24-hour number 011-375-5920 to make donations.
The cause of the fire was unknown.
