Five people were run over and killed after a truck driver lost control of the vehicle in Babanango, the Kwazulu-Natal transport department said on Tuesday.
Department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said the driver of the truck, which carried corrugated iron, lost control on the P48/R68 route, killing three women and two male road workers.
It is believed the accident may have been caused by rainy weather.
Transport MEC Willies Mchunu urged motorists to drive carefully in the rain and to exercise patience on the roads.
