Three people were killed after the roof of a store collapsed during a storm in Nkumbi, near Vryheid in northern KwaZulu-Natal, the SABC reported on Monday.
The strong winds also left a trail of blown roof tops and debris in their wake.
Abaqulusi mayor George Dlamini said the storm wreaked havoc across fifty square kilometres of the area, leaving hundreds of people stranded.
He said they were busy assessing the extent of the damage to property, power lines and other infrastructure.
