A 23-year-old man drowned after getting into distress while swimming at a Durban beach this afternoon.
The exact circumstances of the incident remain vague and will form the subject of a South African Police Force inquest investigation.
All indications are that three men had been swimming in the surf when all got into distress. They were purportedly pulled out to the backline by a strong rip current.
eThekwini Municipality Lifeguards on duty at the beach rushed to aid the floundering swimmers. All three were pulled to the shore and the afore mentioned male was not breathing and was pulse less.
Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene and initiated advanced life support care. The man was intubated and placed on a manual ventilator. Despite the best efforts of paramedics the man died at the scene.
