Five people have been injured after a runaway truck crashed through an intersection of the N3 off ramp and Jan Smuts Highway this afternoon.
ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found two cars in the intersection, a bakkie was found a few meters away from the intersection. The truck which had almost gone through a wall of a petrol station was found on its side.
Two people from the bakkie had suffered minor to moderate injuries and were treated by ER24 paramedics and transported to Life Westville Hospital for further medical treatment. The driver of the truck was still entrapped and was in a serious condition. Advanced life support intervention had to be performed while emergency personnel used specialised equipment to stabilise the vehicle and the patient.
While the driver was being stabilised, his two colleagues who managed to get out of the vehicle without assistance were treated for possible neck and back injuries. The driver and his two colleagues were all taken to Addington Hospital by road, where nursing staff were waiting to take over medical care from the paramedics.
It is believed that the driver of the truck may have experienced mechanical problems while coming down Jan Smuts Highway from Sherwood, causing him to lose control and crash into the vehicles at the intersection.
All necessary authorities are on the scene and will be investigating the incident further.
