Four boys died when their dormitory at the Christiana School for the Blind caught fire, North West authorities said on Monday.
“The four, all boys aged between 8 and 9, died after they inhaled smoke in the room in which they were sleeping,” education department spokesperson Paul Ntlatleng said.
The blaze started around 22:30 on Sunday in the Christiana school.
“The body of one learner who was slightly burnt on the head was found under the bed,” he said.
The cause of the fire was unknown. Police were still on the scene to determine the extent of the damage.
The children’s names could not be released as their next of kin had not been informed.
Police spokesperson Captain Aafje Botma said they had opened an inquest docket and would investigate the deaths.
