15 People were injured in a side impact accident on the Higgenson highway N 2 on ramp intersection this morning at around 11h00. Exact details of the accident are still sketchy and will remain a subject for police investigation and comment.
When the Netcare 911 paramedic’s, firemen and the EMRS arrived they found that the taxi had struck a 5 ton truck in the side with such force that the truck was flipped up against the traffic lights. The crumpled remains of the taxi were standing across the roadway with some of the commuters trapped in the twisted metal.
After triaging medics established that 2 people were in a critical condition and a further 13 were suspected to have sustained serious injuries. While firemen used the Jaws of Life to free the injured medics worked tirelessly to stabilise them.
One of the critically wounded men had to be placed on a ventilator by the Provincial advanced life support paramedic before he was transported to the Albert Lethuli hospital for further care. The other patients were stabilised on scene and then transported to various area hospitals in Durban for the care that they required.
