The Volunteer Wildfire Services has highlighted the dangers of runaway fires at the beginning of the ‘fire season’ in the Western Cape.
The organisation is hosting its 11th annual open day where the public see for themselves what fire fighters do on a daily basis.
It said the event was a fundraiser where food, drinks and merchandise would be on sale.
VWS spokesman Ryan Heydenrych said it was not all fun and games and added it was important to educate communities about fires.
“We are teaching them about general awareness. People must look out for when wild fires can spread. So when it is hot and windy conditions, they must be very careful with plans like having a braai. And they must be very careful where they throw their cigarette butts,” he said.
