The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) said it was running out of blood for the festive season.
They have appealed to all eligible South Africans to donate urgently ahead of the festive season. The bank said there was more than a 50 percent shortage in stock and this would not be sufficient for the holiday period.
The SANBS said that this year, people went on holiday without taking the time to donate blood.
The Organisation’s Sini Subrayen said hospitals were facing a tough task as a result.
“Generally all the hospitals are short of blood,” he said. “We require about 3,000 units per day and we really not getting that amount of blood in…”
