Man killed by wayward taxi, three injured

Roadsafety default
A man was killed and three other people were injured when they were struck by a minibus on the corner of West and Alice Streets in Sandton this morning.

The cause of the accident remains unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation. All indications are that the minibus had entered the junction and then veered from the road, mounting the curb and striking the group of people who had been at the roadside.

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that one man had been pinned between the wreckage of the minibus taxi and a perimeter wall on the corner. The minibus had been moved to allow medics access to the man.

He had sustained multi-system traumatic injuries and had unfortunately died prior to the arrival of Netcare911 Paramedics. The remaining injured, who had managed to escape bearing the full brunt of the impact, were treated and stabilised at the scene before they were transported by ambulance to an area medical facility for the care that they required.

The driver of the taxi was uninjured in the incident.

Traffic in the busy arterial junction was obstructed while emergency service personnel cleared the scene.
