The Unlimited Dusi’s chairman Cameron Mackenzie has been involved in a gyrocopter accident, says a spokesman for the body, which organises the popular canoe marathon.

“We have just heard that the chairman of The Unlimited Dusi has been involved in an accident in his gyrocopter on the Dusi route,” Ray de Vries said in a statement on Thursday.

He said he was on his way to the scene. De Vries could not be reached on his cellphone.

“As soon as I get to the site, I will issue a more comprehensive report.”

Update from Eyewitness News

Unlimited Dusi Canoe Marathon Chairman Cameron McKenzie has emerged unscathed following a gyrocopter accident.

McKenzie and a passenger were flying along the race route when an emergency landing went wrong, resulting in the crash.

Race spokesperson Ray de Vries, who was on the scene, said the two only sustained a few bumps and bruises.

“They haven’t been hurt. They have bruises, they are shocked, but no medical attention required. I flew in on a helicopter as soon as I heard about it and we air-lifted them back to Pietermaritzburg.”

“Thankfully, they are both fine,” he said.
