The community of Jika Joe informal settlement, just outside Pietermaritzburg are the real heroes this afternoon after finding a five day old baby abandon and lying in some grass behind some shacks.
ER24 paramedics were called to the scene by the community after they found the young baby still fully clothed and wrapped in a blanket. Paramedics assessed the baby and could not find anything medically wrong with her but felt she needed to be taken to Northdale Hospital for a further medical assessment.
It is unclear were the mother is or who the parents are of the child but the necessary authorities will be investigating the incident further.
