A school outing has ended in tragedy after a 14 year old girl went missing while swimming in a stream.
It is believed that a group of children from a school in Johannesburg were on a tour at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort when some of the girls went off for a swim. They allegedly went to the waterfall and were swimming in the stream. The 14 year old girl is believed to have suddenly been swept away by a current and she did not resurface. Her fellow school mates then tried to locate her but to no avail.
Almost 2 hours later and the girl has still not been recovered. It is presumed that she is deceased due to drowning in the river.
The ER24 Discovery Trauma Support team were immediately dispatched to the scene as the group were absolutely emotionally distraught. The girl’s parents were at the scene and they will need extensive counseling in dealing with this tragic incident.
The search for the girl will continue, and the scene has been handed over to the SAP and their team of Rescue Divers.
