Two toddlers were killed by a train when they were playing on railway tracks in Manenberg in Cape Town, police said.
Mogamat Salie and his brother Mogfaiek, aged three and two, died when lying on railway tracks near their home in Manenberg at about 5pm on Thursday afternoon.
“Apparently they opened the gate and got out of the house,” said Warrant Officer Llewellyn Lakay.
The Provincial Community Police Forum Board said that the minders of the children, the community, and Transnet should all take responsibility for the tragic incident.
Fencing which protected the communities was removed by vagrants or was sold as scrap metal.
“The community has not pro-actively done anything about this nor has the authority repaired or maintained this fencing over a number of years,” said the board’s spokesman Hanif Loonat.
He urged a meeting to find meaningful solutions to the issues which faced Western Cape communities.
“We are losing young lives on a regular basis. Let us hold people accountable for these tragedies and as society raise our concerns unitedly on a regular basis.”
