Four people were injured, two men critically, when two light motor vehicles collided head-on on the N1 on the outskirts of Kroonstad in the Free State this afternoon.
The cause of the accident remains unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.
Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the vehicles had ploughed into one another head-on before both skidded out-of-control and left the road, eventually grinding to a halt in a field.
Two of the occupants were entrapped in the wreckage of one of the vehicles. They were cut free by Firefighters using the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic rescue equipment.
All the injured were treated and stabilised at the scene before they were transported by ambulance to an area medical facility for the care that they required.
