Fire warning issued by Cape Town fire services

Cape Town Fire Services have warned that late winter rains have resulted in drier than usual vegetation which could lead to runaway veld fires.

Cape Town’s winter rains usually fall during late March and early April but this year’s seasonably wet winter is yet to arrive.

Long term forecasters have predicted the rains would come later than usual this year.

Cape Town Fire Service spokesperson Theo Layne said they still have to deal with very summery conditions.

“The vegetation out there is still very dry so it doesn’t have to be that hot or that windy for runaway fires to develop,” he said.
