A man has drowned and two men are missing after a sea rescue went wrong in Wilderness, along the Garden Route, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Sunday.
“It appears that the two missing men and the deceased man were swept out to sea by rip-currents while swimming [on Sunday],” NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.
“The fourth man, who is now in hospital, went to their aid before getting into difficulty himself,” he said.
The man, 31, was in a serious condition after being treated for near-drowning symptoms.
A 35-year-old man from Riversdale was declared dead at the scene.
The incident happened at the mouth of the Gwaing River.
A police dive unit were still searching for the men.
