The 28th of April each year marks the World Day for Health and Safety at Work. I was alerted to this by my friends from ER24 who have to attend to many of the victims from accidents at the workplace. I would like to quoye from the ER24 Blog
“Not only are billions lost in revenue each year due to injury sustained in the line of duty, but personal illness adds to the 4% loss in revenue due to employees taking sick leave.
This day was first promoted in 2003, with the International Labour Organisation determining the need for more awareness to be created around occupational health and safety. Not only is it absolutely important to be aware of your surroundings while at work in terms of safety procedures for using everything from machinery to needles etc, but to be aware of other medical illnesses that could affect you personally and prevent you from performing your duty as required.
Every business should have an Occupational Health and Safety manual – take ownership on yourself and determine where health and safety issues could affect you in your everyday work. Also, maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent loss of work due to personal illness.
Make sure you know what to do in the event that disaster would strike at your place of work. Know where the first aid kits are, and how and when to call for emergency assistance. In your private capacity, have regular cholesterol and blood sugar tests, eat the right food stuffs and maintain a healthy exercise routine.
Know the Health and Safety aspects of your place of work and share them with your colleagues.”
