A woman was killed and a man was critically injured when the motorcycle they were on collided with a car on the R61 near Shelley Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast this afternoon.
The cause of the incident and series of events leading up to it remain unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.
Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the motorcycle and the light motor vehicle had been travelling north towards Durban with the former slammed into the rear of the latter.
The force of impact threw both the rider and his companion from the bike. Both were found lying in the roadway. The woman had sustained critical injuries and unfortunately had died prior to the arrival of medics. The rider was in a critical condition, having sustained significant head trauma. Paramedics at the scene before he was airlifted by the Air Mercy Services Red Cross Helicopter to the Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital for further medical care. The occupants of the vehicle were uninjured in the smash.
