A 6 month old baby boy was killed in a serious accident on the N12 near the Tom Jones Road offramp this afternoon.
It is believed that the taxi, travelling between Springs and Johannesburg, experienced mechanical failure before crashing down the roadside embankment and into a residential wall. The taxi was carrying 12 people at the time, including the 6 month old baby, as well as an 18 month old baby girl. The little girl was in a critical condition and needed her vital functions to be taken over by the Advanced Life Support paramedic at the scene. The ER24 Discovery Medicopter was immediately called in to assist with her transportation to hospital. The little girl was airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg where she remained in a critical condition.
All emergency services from the surrounding area responded to the accident to assist with patient treatment and transport.
The remaining 10 passengers of the taxi, including the driver, suffered minor to moderate injuries. They were all transported to Tambo Memorial Hospital for further care.
The Police attended the scene and will be conducting the full investigation into the accident.
