A twenty four year old female was treated this afternoon for possible neck and back injuries after she was thrown from her horse on a farm in Hillcrest.
VEMA and ER24 arrived on the scene and found the young female lying on the floor complaining of pains to her neck, pelvis and leg. Advanced life support intervention had to be performed on the patient by means of pain medication. Due to the location of where the patient was lying and the road conditions, paramedics decided that the patient needed to be airlifted from the scene.
While the patient was being stabilised further, the Red Cross Air Mercy Helicopter was called to assist with the transportation of the patient to Life Entabeni Hospital in a serious but stable condition where trauma staff were waiting to take over the medical care of the patient.
It is believed that the patient was riding her horse and practising her show jumping when the horse acted up and threw her from the saddle. The patient said she landed hard on the ground which made her concern about the pains that she was feeling.
