The ER24 Pietermaritzburg crews as well as the Fire and Rescue Services from the area were needed at the Old Ashburton Road after a car had allegedly driven off the bridge.
The station wagon was found in the stream, down the embankment, approximately 2 meters down from the road. The vehicle allegedly plummeted nose first off a bridge after the driver lost control. It is not yet known why the driver lost control of his vehicle, and the Police who were at the scene will investigate. All that is known, is that he had been travelling in the direction of Ashburton, away from the Pietermaritzburg side when the accident happened.
The man was found still sitting in the drivers seat of the car. The front of the vehicle was significantly damaged and the dashboard had been moved right up to where the man had been sitting. The Fire and Rescue Services had to use specialised equipment to push the dashboard away from the man so that rescuers could get him out of the car.
The 38 year old man needed treatment for a head injury that he had sustained in the accident. He was treated by the Advanced Life Support paramedic at the scene and was taken to Edendale Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
