Serious head-on-collision in Macassar leaves 8 injured

A serious head-on collision on Macassar road in Macassar has left a total of 8 people with various injuries.

It is not clear as to how the collision occurred, but two vehicles, a Hyundai bakkie and a Nissan Sentra, had collided head-on at some speed. Members of the public and residents, who live near to where the incident occurred, recalled hearing a loud bang shortly after 08:00.

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they found the two vehicles a few meters away from each other. The bakkie had bounced off of the Nissan before colliding with the road side barrier. The bakkie had 2 people, the driver and a passenger in the front cabin, and 5 workers on the load bed. The passenger in the drivers cabin was entrapped in the vehicle as the impact with the barrier had caused his legs to be pinned by the twisted metal.

The provincial Department of Health: EMS Rescue services then extricated the injured passenger from the wrecked vehicle with the use of specialised hydraulic rescue equipment. The man had sustained severe injuries to both his lower legs. Due to his injuries and the distance to the most appropriate medical facility, on-scene paramedics dispatched the ER24 Discovery medicopter to the scene. The man was then treated and stabilised at the scene before being airlifted to Cape Gate Mediclinic for further medical care.

With great communication between ER24 and the Provincial Department of Health: Emergency Medical Services a further total of 7 patients received treatment for various injuries ranging from scrapes and bruises to suspected back injuries before being transported to hospital. Local law enforcement authorities were at the scene and will be investigating the incident further.
