Man severely injured in towing collision

KLAPMUTS 25 July 2011, 06:20

One man has sustained serious injuries this morning during a motor vehicle collision on the N1 highway near the Klapmuts off ramp.

The man was steering a vehicle which was being towed by his wife and daughter in a leading vehicle. Upon nearing the Klapmuts off ramp the rope broke, forcing both vehicles to a standstill at the side of the highway. The father then exited the vehicle and indicated to his wife to reverse the leading vehicle so that he could reattach the rope.

Then without warning a truck collided with the rear of the stationary vehicle at some speed. The unoccupied vehicle then collided with the father, running him over, before clipping the leading vehicle occupied by the mother and daughter.

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they found the injured man aged 42 under the rear of the wrecked vehicle. He had sustained a severe injury to his left leg in the form of multiple fractures as well as multiple bruises and lacerations to his face. The man then received on scene treatment before being transported to Cape Gate Mediclinic for further medical care.

The mother and daughter had sustained minor injuries and were also treated at the scene before being transported to hospital. The driver of the truck had sustained no injuries. Local law enforcement authorities were at the scene and will be investigating the incident further.
