Construction worker crushed by falling crane

One man has died in an industrial accident in Somerset West this morning. The incident occurred at a warehouse construction site off of the N2 highway.

The events leading up to the incident is still unclear. According to witnesses a construction worker was setting up the boom of a crane for operation. This allegedly involved the worker, to work on the crane boom at ground level with the boom hanging 1 meter overhead.

Without warning the boom then plummeted to the ground crushing the worker. When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene the man believed to be aged in his 50’s was still entrapped under the boom.

The man had sustained significant crushing injuries to his back and chest and was later declared dead at the scene. Local law enforcement authorities who attended the scene will be investigating the incident further.
