An ER24 paramedic was driving in Knysna this afternoon when he was suddenly stopped by a civilian in a Bakkie. The person then informed the paramedic that a boat had allegedly capsized in the Knysna lagoon and that there may be injured people in need of medical attention.
The paramedic immediately activated the local fire and rescue services and the NSRI to come out to the scene. As the paramedic arrived at the lagoon, close to where the boat had capsized he was told that a civilian had launched his boat to go and aid the distressed casualties.
There were a total of 5 individuals on the boat, 2 male adults and 3 boys aged 3, 6 and 9. When the Good Samaritan arrived at the capsized boat he pulled 3 of the casualties out of the cold water.
A father and his son were allegedly caught under the capsized vessel. Fortunately the father and son pair was able to free themselves before being pulled aboard the boat.
Once on shore ER24 paramedics treated all 6 casualties for hypothermia and shock before transporting them to the Life Knysna hospital for further medical care.
