Two taxis collided head on, on Modderfontein Road (M38) in Rabie Ridge in Midrand this evening. The accident happened on a downhill in the road, but the cause is as yet not clear.
The taxis were still crushed into one another when paramedics arrived at the scene. In total, 24 patients needed treatment for various injuries, while a woman had already succumbed to fatal injuries, and she was still trapped in the front seat of one of the taxis. She was declared dead at the scene.
A 2 year old little boy was in a critical condition, he had been ejected from one of the taxis and he needed immediate life saving treatment. Paramedics took over his vital functions and they called in the ER24 Discovery Medicopter which would assist in rapid transport of the boy to hospital. He was airlifted to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for care.
2 other people had suffered serious injuries; a man and woman were stabilised at the scene being treated for multiple injuries including head injuries and broken bones.
The remaining 21 people, including a second child, a 3 year old boy, suffered minor to moderate injuries. They were all treated for their injuries at the scene and all of the remaining patients were transported to Tembisa Hospital by ambulance.
The cause of the collision will need to be investigated by the necessary officials who attended the scene.
