[Montgomery Park 09 December 2011 13:30]
Two taxis collided at the corners of Beyers Naude Drive and Judith Avenue in Montgomery Park this afternoon leaving 1 dead and 17 others with various injuries.
Both taxis had substantial damage on both their front and rear ends making it difficult to tell what the actual mechanism of the accident was or as to who had been at fault in the cause of the accident. The taxis were found separated, with parts of both vehicles strewn across the road.
Upon arrival of the paramedics, some of the patients had climbed from the wrecks already and were found nearby. 4 people were still trapped in the vehicles and the Jaws of Life were needed to cut them out. Sadly one of them had already died due to his injuries and nothing further could be done for him. He had been sitting in the front passenger seat of one of the taxis.
4 people were treated for severe injuries of whom one needed to be placed on Advanced Life Support equipment. The other 3 were treated for multiple broken bones and were taken to nearby Hospitals for further emergency care.
The remaining 13 occupants of the taxis were treated for moderate to minor injuries and transported per ambulance to hospital.
All of the patients were either taken to Helen Joseph or Charlotte Maxeke Hospital barring one woman who was taken to Milpark.
The police remained at the scene to investigate the cause of the accident.
Traffic in the vicinity remains severely affected.
