At approximately 17:00 this evening paramedics from ER24 attended to a collision on Edendale Road in Pietermaritzburg where two people were injured.
While paramedics were busy extricating the patients from the vehicle they heard tyres screaming. When paramedics looked up they witnessed a bus that lost control and swerved to avoid colliding with the paramedics. Paramedics explained that the bus hit a bridge and became airborne. During its path of destruction the bus collided head on with a taxi traveling in the opposite direction.
Emergency workers rushed to second scene only a few meters away from them. They found that the bus fortunately had no passengers inside of it at the time and only the driver sustained minor injuries. Three people from the taxi sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care.
It is not clear why the bus driver did not see the initial accident. Edendale Road has been blocked off for traffic in both directions until the bus can me removed from the bridge.
The exact cause of the incident will be investigated.
