A fisherman aboard a Mossel Bay trawler was brought to land on Monday morning after being seriously injured by a hydraulic winch, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the man went into shock early on Monday after injuring his head, arm and leg.
“[He]… was seriously injured after being struck by a piece of the hydraulic winch which, according to the skipper, flew loose after the safety pin reportedly snapped, hitting the crewman on the head and causing him to fall and sustain multiple serious injuries.”
A rescue crew boarded the pilchard fishing boat, Uma Dala, and stabilised the man.
The trawler returned to Mossel Bay harbour from where the injured man was taken to hospital.
