A 65-year-old British tourist drowned while swimming at Jeffrey’s Bay on Saturday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

Police alerted the NSRI that a man was in difficulty at the beach in front of Kabaljous Caravan Park, said Jeffrey’s Bay station commander Rieghard Janse van Rensburg.

NSRI volunteers, police and provincial emergency management services responded to the scene.

Bystanders dragged the unconscious man from the water and attempted to resuscitate him.

Paramedics relieved them, but the man was later declared dead on the scene.

An autopsy would be performed to establish the exact cause of death.

Janse van Rensburg said the man’s family would receive counselling.
