A 32 year old man’s arm was severed below the shoulder after an accident at his work place in Germiston this afternoon.
The man was allegedly working on a piece of machinery when he suddenly got his arm caught up in one of the rollers, which appears to have pulled his arm in as far as just below his shoulder before it stopped. When paramedics arrived at the scene, the man was alert, orientated but in a severe amount of pain as his arm was still entrapped. The local Fire Department was called in so as to assist with the removal of the machinery around the man’s arm if needs be.
Paramedics attempted to stabilise the man while the Fire Department were on their way, but a short while later the man pulled and his arm came off below the shoulder. The ER24 Discovery Medicopter had already been dispatched, as paramedics knew that the man would require urgent medical care. They further stabilised him at the scene before he was airlifted to the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. The Medicopter landed at the Primrose Fire Department where the man was loaded for transportation.
The severely damaged arm was removed from the machine and packaged for transportation with the man to hospital.
