Tanker catches fire outside Bethlehem

[BETHLEHEM, FS, 21 June 2012, 09:00]

One man was fortunate to have sustained minor injuries only this morning after a tanker transporting a combustible fluid caught fire outside Bethlehem.

The events leading up to the incident are unclear, but the tanker transporting the fluid had allegedly veered off of the R57, approximately 60 kilometers outside Bethlehem. The tanker then overturned before catching fire and burning out completely.

ER24 paramedics from the Bethlehem branch were dispatched to the scene and found that the only occupant, the driver believed to be aged 38, was able to remove himself from the now, burning wreck.

Fortunately the man had sustained no injuries, but received on-scene treatment for smoke inhalation. The driver was later transported to Mediclinic Hoogland for further treatment. Local law enforcement officials attended the scene and will be investigating the incident further.
