Rescue at Howick Falls

[Howick, KZN 22 June 2012 16:00]

Pietermaritzburg paramedics were called to an incident just above the Howick Falls where there were reports that a man had fallen off a ledge.

The man had allegedly been standing on the ledge when he suddenly fell approximately 50 meters through the dense bush. When paramedics initially arrived on the scene they were unable to get to the man and their attempts to call down to him did not get any reaction out of him. The man was just lying there and paramedics quickly called in the local SAP Search and Rescue Unit. Within minutes they were on scene, with the Rescuers going down to where the man lay.

They managed to get through the shrubbery, including thorny bushes and they were surprised but glad to find that the man had only sustained multiple scratches to his body as he fell off the ledge. The man was in a stable condition and was hoisted up to the top of the ledge where paramedics could assess him thoroughly.

The 28 year old had miraculously not sustained any serious injuries, but his wounds were dressed and he was taken per ambulance to Northdale hospital for further assessment.
