[PIETERMARITZBURG, KZN – 02 JULY 2012 AT 14H00]
A horrific accident on the New Grey Town Road near Allandale Drive in Pietermaritzburg involving a truck, a bakkie and a light motor vehicle has left one person dead, one person in a critical condition and four others sustained serious injuries this afternoon.
ER24 and other emergency personnel arrived on the scene and found the three vehicles in the road with extensive damage. Paramedics assessed the scene and found that the driver of the bakkie was still entrapped. Unfortunately the driver had sustained serious traumatic and fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene. The local Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life and other rescue equipment to extricate the deceased from the wreckage.
The front passenger and two other occupants of the bakkie were found out of the vehicle and lying on the road side. They were treated for suspected neck and back injuries and the front passenger was treated for possible chest injuries and internal injuries due to the impact. Advanced Life Support intervention was performed on the patient to help stabilise the patient further.
The driver of the light motor vehicle which is believed to be a male in his fifties is in a critical condition. Advanced Life Saving techniques had to be performed on the patient before he was rushed off to Greys Hospital in a critical condition.
The circumstances around the accident are unknown at the moment but the local law enforcements were on the scene and would be investigating the accident further.
