Boating accident in Umkomaas

A grandfather, his son and three young grandchildren have sustained various injuries following a boating accident in Umkomaas this morning.

They appear to have been trying to launch the power boat into the water when something went wrong and the boat flipped over. The two men and three children were flung into the water, but ER24 paramedics arrived to find them soaking wet but having managed to swim to the shore to safety.

The grandfather, a man in his 60’s had sustained what appeared to have been the most serious injuries of the five. He had suffered injuries to his face and had a hook stuck in his leg. He was treated for his injuries and along with the 10 year old grandson who had suffered multiple cuts and bruises, were taken by ambulance to the Kingsway Hospital for further care.

The father of the children, and the two younger boys, between the ages of 4 and 7, were assessed and treated for minor injuries, but they did not require further treatment at hospital and they awaited private transport from the scene of the incident with the wife and grandmother.
