Three year old killed and eight year old injured in R501 accident

[Carletonville, NW 25 August 2012 12:00]

A three year old little girl was killed and her eight year old brother injured after the vehicle that they were traveling in rolled on the R501 between Carletonville and Potchefstroom.

The children’s father was driving the vehicle when it appears that he suddenly lost control approximately 25 kilometers outside of Carletonville. The Nissan Navara overturned several times coming to rest in the middle of the road on its roof.

Paramedics arrived on scene to find the little girl lying a short distance away from the vehicle, having been ejected from the vehicle as it overturned. Sadly, she had already succumbed to the nature of her extensive injuries and there was nothing further that paramedics could do to save her life. She was declared dead on scene a short while later.

According to witnesses, the eight year old boy was found lying next to his sister, and it is believed that he too had been ejected from the vehicle. Bystanders moved him away from the little girl as they suspected that she was already deceased.

Paramedics treated the boy for signs of a severe back injury and transported him to a nearby hospital for further care.

The children’s father had crawled from the wreckage himself and did not require any further assessment or medical attention.

Local authorities will conduct all necessary investigations into the cause of this tragic accident.
