Two pupils died after being struck by lightning in Ndwedwe, north of Durban, a KwaZulu-Natal official said on Tuesday.
Co-operative governance spokesman Vernon Mchunu said the pupils were from the same family.
The lightning struck a grade 12 and grade four pupil during a thunderstorm on Monday night.
Co-operative governance MEC Nomusa Dube said: “We are saddened to learn of the incident. Again, Mother Nature has cast a dark shadow upon us.”
Dube sent her condolences to the family.
Mchunu said the deaths brought to eight the number of people who had died since the start of the summer season due to bad weather.
A fortnight ago, one person was struck by lightning in Nongoma; three people drowned in Nquthu and last week, two people drowned in Hluhluwe. – Sapa
