Vehicle veers off of N3 highway and plummets down ravine

[SHONGWENI, KZN, 4 November 2012, 15:15]

Three ladies sustained injuries this afternoon following a single vehicle collision on the N3 highway in Shongweni.

The cause of the collision is unclear at this stage, but the single vehicle veered out of control before leaving the road and going down an embankment. The vehicle fell nearly 50 meters down the ravine, hitting trees on the way down, before coming to a standstill between two stumps and on its roof.

ER24 Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that three ladies were entrapped in the vehicle. Special rope rescue techniques were used to later extricate the injured patients out of the ravine. The ladies sustained injuries ranging from suspected back and neck injuries to various broken bones as well as scrapes and bruises.

The patients received treatment at the scene before being transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment. Local law enforcement officials attended the scene and will be investigating the cause of the collision further.
