Our Johannesburg East teams have attended to two fatal incidents that happened this morning.
At around 6am, they were called out to a fatal head on collision that had taken place on the R50 outside of Delmas. Approximately 20 kilometres outside of Delmas in the direction of Pretoria, a bakkie and sedan collided head on into one another.
Upon arrival of paramedics, it was found that 6 school children had been sitting in the back closed compartment of a bakkie when the collision happened. Fortunately they had been sitting on mattresses and they had not been badly injured despite the extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. The six children and the driver of the bakkie were transported to hospitals in the vicinity for further assessment and care of minor injuries.
In the sedan had been three occupants. The front of the vehicle was crushed and ripped and sadly one of the front seat occupants had not survived his injuries. The man believed to be in his late 50’s was found to be trapped in the mangled wreckage and was declared dead on scene. The other two occupants were treated for moderate injuries and taken to hospital by ambulance.
The cause of the fatal collision is still under investigation by local authorities.
Just after 8am this morning, paramedics and the Fire and Rescue team were called out to Becker street in Springs. A house was on fire and information was provided that one of the residents was still inside.
According to witnesses, the elderly couple had managed to get out of the burning building, but the man in his 70’s had then gone back inside so as to rescue his pets and he did not come out. The Fire Department extinguished the blaze and they found the remains of the man inside.
Sadly, nothing more could be done to save the man’s life and he was declared dead on scene.
The elderly woman was transported to a nearby hospital for further assessment, but there was no visibly signs of injury to her body.
Local authorities will conduct all necessary investigations into the cause of the blaze.
