[Kokstad & Cato Ridge, KZN – 20 June 2013]

Incident Type: AER24 KZN Airborne

AER24 KZN was airborne to a motor vehicle accident this morning on the N2 near Kokstad where two trucks had a head on collision.

ResQmed arrived on scene and found the driver of the one truck was entrapped and would need the Jaws of Life and other rescue equipment to extricate the driver who is believed to be in his mid-twenties from the wreckage. The patient was extricated and treated for suspected neck and back injuries and possible broken bones. The patient was airlifted to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg for rapid medical care.

While the patient was being handed over to the hospital staff, another call came in for a patient that had fallen off a tractor in Cato Ridge and had suspected neck and back injuries and possible pelvis injuries.

The ER24 paramedics responded to the scene and started to stabilise the patient before he was transported by AER24 to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg in a serious but stable condition for further medical intervention.

Both incidents would be investigated by the local authorities.
