A family of five lost all their belongings when their apartment caught fire on Twist Street in Hillbrow, Johannesburg this afternoon.
When ER24 paramedics arrived on location they were told that the youngest child, aged 4, ran out of the bathroom screaming that one of the bedrooms had caught fire. She together along with her teenage siblings and their mother immediately ran out of the apartment. Their father stayed behind to grab the gas heater out of fear that it would cause an explosion. He suffered from smoke inhalation.
The rest of the family was fortunate to have escaped with no injuries.
Most of their belongings were scorched to ashes leaving them without a place to sleep tonight.
There is no clarity on how the fire started.
