The Police in the Mothutlung registered a case of Inquest after a 27-year-old died due to injuries allegedly sustained when he fell out of moving police armoured (Nyala) on Tuesday, 14 January 2014 at approximately 06:40 at Damonsville.
It is alleged the police were patrolling the area when they dispersed the people who barricaded roads with stones, burning tyres and other objects and arrested two males and put them inside to be taken to the police station. They were arrested for Public Violence as well as Contravention of Road Traffic Act of 1989. It is alleged that the first suspect and escaped unharmed. It is reported that few minutes later the second man also jumped out but he fell of the tarred road where he sustained head injuries. The ambulance was called and he was taken to Job Shimankane Tabane Hospital where he died.
The case of Inquest will be referred to Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for investigation. Internal investigation will be done based on the recommendation from the IPID. The incident follows protest action that started on Sunday, 12 January 2014 where residents complained about shortage of water in the areas of Mothutlung and Damonsville respectively.
Meanwhile, fourteen other suspects arrested for Contravention of Road Traffic are expected to appear in Brits Magistrates Courts today. They were arrested yesterday but release on warning to appear today.
