Four people have been killed and twenty seven people have sustained serious injuries after a bus lost control and rolled down an embankment just after 6am in Kwa Mashu this morning.
Rescue Care paramedics as well as numerous ambulance services responded to the fatal bus crash. On arrival paramedics were met with carnage. Patients had been ejected from the wreckage as it rolled down the embankment. A forward control point was set up by all relevant services on scene and as ambulances were arriving they were allocated patients in an effort to ensure all patients were treated.
The Air Mercy Helicopter was called to assist in transporting one of the critically injured patients to a Durban hospital. Unfortunately three people had passed away before paramedics arrived and a fourth past away despite Advanced Life Support paramedics attempting to save them. A further twenty seven people had sustained various injuries and were stabilized on scene before being transported to various Durban hospitals.
At this stage it is unclear what caused the vehicle to lose control and roll over however SAPS Accident Response unit will be investigating further.
