Alert King Williams’ Town Crime Prevention members arrested a Western Cape man suspected of transporting more than 800 units of abalone worth an estimated R1million in King William’s Town yesterday at about 15:15.
It is alleged that the 32-year-old suspect was spotted driving a white bakkie with a Gauteng registration from the Western Cape, Gansbaai en route to East London. The members noticed liquid dripping from the back of the bakkie. They decided to stop the driver and questioned him. When he failed to give satisfactory answers, the members examined the back of the bakkie and found boxes filled with abalone. The driver was arrested immediately.
The suspect had been charged with contravening the Marine Living Resources Act of 1998 and will appear in the King William’s Town Magistrates’ Court on 25 September 2014.
